A young Afghan man, a detainee at Melbourne Immigration Detention Centre has passed away yesterday night.  Victoria Police confirmed the death of the 23-year-old man, saying he died at a government facility in Broadmeadows at 12.20am on Saturday morning.

The death is not believed to be suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

According to reports, the deceased member’s roommate heard a loud thud to which he saw the man lying on the ground – face first. Officers immediately responded to him, and gave him CPR for an estimated 10 minutes. A paramedics team tried to resuscitate the young man for around 45 mins, however, to no avail.

Other members of  the detention centre who knew him described him as a ‘quiet guy’ who would Skype with his mother every morning. SBS Australia reported ‘friends of the young man were mourning his death’.
