Police have arrested an 18-year-old Coburg man following their investigation into a sexual assault in Preston earlier this year.
Investigators have been told a 20-year-old woman got off a number 45 tram on route 86 on Plenty Road about 10.44pm on 15 January.
An unknown male got off the tram at the same time and approached the woman on Bell Street and allegedly sexually assaulted her before leaving on foot. The incident happened two hours prior the murder of Aiia Maasarwe after alleged assault in the nearby suburb of Bundoora who was travelling in the same tram line.
The 18-year-old was arrested and interviewed by police last night and released pending summons.
