
According to the latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia has experienced a significant increase in its Nepali-born population over the past five years. The number of people born in Nepal and living in Australia rose by 67,752, representing a dramatic 123.7 percent growth since the previous Census.
In terms of countries of birth outside Australia, India recorded the largest increase. The Indian-born population in Australia grew by nearly 220,000 individuals (217,963 to be exact), highlighting India’s position as a leading contributor to Australia’s migrant population.
The 2021 Census further revealed the ongoing multicultural evolution of Australian society. Nearly half of the population (48.2 percent) now have at least one parent born overseas, reflecting the country’s deepening cultural diversity. Additionally, 27.6 percent of people living in Australia were themselves born in another country, demonstrating Australia’s continued status as a major destination for international migrants.
Since 2017, more than one million people (1,020,007) have migrated to Australia, underscoring the country’s role as a global hub for new opportunities and settlement. These trends paint a clear picture of Australia’s dynamic demographic landscape, shaped by ongoing waves of migration and enriched by a growing variety of cultural backgrounds.
