Sydney, Australia:

An international student from Nepal has drowned in Wattamolla lagoon in Sydney’s Royal National Park. The young international student, Mr. Sachet Bimali, jumped into the water from a rock near the beach, however did not know how to swim, and was therefore unable to reach the shore.

Mr. Bimali was accompanied by a friend, who had jumped into the water together. The friend was able to swim to safety, and seeing her friend struggle, reached for help from bystanders.

As there is no phone reception at the beach, one of the bystanders raced to call triple zero from an emergency phone – however, it was too late before help could arrive.

Mr. Bimali was pursuing a Master’s degree in IT at Sydney’s Macquarie University.

This is the second tragedy to affect the Nepali community at Wattamolla Beach.

In December, 2016, a 29 year old Nepali national drowned at the same lagoon in Wattamolla beach. The man was visiting the beach with his friends on Christmas Day.
