Police have arrested two over an alleged hit and run incident which claimed the life of an international student from Sri Lanka. 20 year old Nisali Perera, attending Monash University died at the scene after being hit by a car near the university’s Clayton campus. It is alleged the car was speeding through a red light.
Following an investigation, police had released a CCTV footage of the two suspects, appealing to the larger community to help locate them. In the CCTV footage the pair were seen walking along a street and were identified as Shayne Cochrane, 37 and Lauren Hindes, 33. Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit arrested the pair in Officer, in Melbourne’s outer-south-east, this afternoon. “They are currently in custody assisting with their enquiries,” a police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Perera’s family is said to be devastated after hearing the news. Known to be a ‘kind and sociable person’, Ms. Perera had joined Monash in February, 2018. She was studying commerce and business psychology.
The accident occurred on Thursday. Police are yet to formally charge the duo.
