Sydney’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks – an annual affair which attracts millions of viewers to its harbour areas will be shortened this year owing to Covid-19 concerns. Mass gatherings will also be prohibited and visitors will have to produce a booking confirmation to gain access to Sydney CBD on New Year’s Eve 2020.

Meanwhile, most of the venues used by the public for viewing the fireworks will be reserved for frontline workers – as a token of gratitude for their services from the NSW Government. The frontline workers will be able to watch the shortened version of the New Year spectacle on Sydney’s Harbour Bridge – with social distancing protocols in place.

For most of the public, this year’s event is expected to be exclusively seen on TV.

The cost of the Firework Display will be footed by the State Government this year instead of City of Sydney. Fines will be issued for those who don’t comply with social distancing, and events in restaurants and private venues will be encouraged over public spaces.
