With the advent of increase in the points in Points-tested stream for Skilled Independent Visas (subclass 189) and the demand for professional job experience in a related field of study for graduates in major cities of Australia, many graduates are switching to other options in pursuit of their journey towards permanent residency.

In Tasmania, after graduating from a tertiary institution with at least one academic year study (40 weeks at a CRICOS registered institution), one might be considered eligible for a state nominated visa.

Ms. Romane, an accounting graduate from Australian Catholic University says, “The state nomination category in Tasmania is one of the major factors that made me move from Sydney to Hobart. Also leaving behind the hustle and bustle life of Sydney, I have been able to enjoy the greenery and clean environment of Tasmania. This makes me energetic every single day.” Ms. Romane is currently studying Diploma of Leadership and Management at ALTEC College and planning to stay in Hobart in the future as the environment reminds her of her hometown.

International students are not only migrating to Tasmania from other states within Australia, they are directly choosing Tasmania as their destination for study from their home country too. Tri Ha, a Vietnamese student at Elizabeth college in Hobart shares her view with the Department of State Growth of Tasmania as, “I chose to study in Tasmania, Australia because the education system is much more organised and specialised, especially in terms of my achievements being recognised internationally. Tasmania is an excellent place to study because it is less stressful, and people are open and friendly.”

With a population of 534,281, accounting for about 2% of Australia’s total population, it is adding 6,000 people per year at the moment. Tasmanian government gives high regard to people who have skills and experiences in occupations of high demand including health, community services, engineering, trade and construction.

For international students planning to study in Tasmania, it would be undeniable to say that the Tasmanian government is looking for people who plan to stay outside of greater Hobart area and commit to stay and contribute to the economy and community of Tasmania.

Boasting unparalleled natural beauty, quality education, an affordable lifestyle, and a vibrant community, the Tasmanian government is leveraging Tasmania’s brand as a study destination.
