Victoria posts 81 new coronavirus cases, 59 deaths

Victoria recorded 81 new cases of Covid-19 overnight on Friday. The state also added a further 59 deaths owing to Covid-19, taking the state’s death toll to 650.

However, it is important to note that all 59 deaths posted on Friday weren’t casualty figures of Friday. Only 6 of the 59 were recorded on Friday. According to Premier Daniel Andrews, 53 of the 59 deaths occurred prior to yesterday. 3 earlier this month (September) and 50 deaths occurred in the months of July and August.

The 53 deaths prior to yesterday are linked to aged care residents, and the delay in reporting has been attributed to a recent change in reporting obligations for aged care providers.

Currently Melbourne has been placed under a stage 4 lockdown, and regional Victoria under Stage 3 restrictions. The government has promised to announce a detailed plan of easing lockdown measures on Sunday.
