Ainaa Jhyal Ko Putali, Lori out of Oscars race


The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the shortlists of films for the 95th Academy Awards. Films in 10 categories will receive the prestigious Academy Awards on March 12, 2023. Documentary feature, documentary short subject, international feature, makeup and hairstyling, sound, original score, original song, animated short film, live action short film and visual effects are included for the Oscars competition this year.

Two films from Nepal were sent for the competition this year, but both of them are not in the initial shortlist. Ainaa Jhyal Ko Putali directed and written by Sujit Bidari was sent under the international feature film category and a short film Lori directed and written by Abinash Bikram Shah was sent to compete in the Live Action Short Film category. Himalaya: Caravan directed by Eric Valli was the first and the only Nepali film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000.

This year, an Indian film Last Film Show directed by Pan Nalin was nominated for the International feature film category and a song “Naatu Naatu” from south Indian blockbuster film RRR were lucky to make to the initial shortlist. Naatu Naatu is selected under original song category.

Likewise, two other films All That Breathes and The Elephant Whisperers from India are also included in the shortlists of documentary feature and documentary short segments. Likewise, Pakistani film Joyland directed by Saim Sadiq has been selected in the nomination under the international feature film category. Joyland is the first Pakistani film to make to the shortlist for the Oscars .

Blockbusters films like Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman are competing for the award this time. Pop stars like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Rihanna are one step closer to getting Oscar nominations.
