Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi to inaugurate NITFest


Shabana Azmi, India’s one of the most acclaimed actresses, is coming to Nepal to participate in the 2nd edition of the Nepal International Theatre Festival (NITFest 2022).

Issuing a press statement on Sunday, organiser Mandala Theatre informed that they have invited Bollywood actress Azmi as a special guest for the inauguration of the festival. The theatre festival will start on November 25.

The director of the festival, Srijana Subba, said that Bollywood actress Azmi will give a ‘masterclass’ to Nepali theatre and film artistes on the second day of the festival.

The second day of the Masterclass Festival will be held on November 26 at 7:30 PM in the main hall of Mandala Theatre.

Actress Shabana Azmi will also award one of the concepts applied for the ‘Innovate V Idea Award’ called by the festival on behalf of the organisers, informed coordinator of the festival Bijaya Karki.

Azmi has received five National Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and various international honours known for her unique and unconventional portrayal of women in the film.

Honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour of India, in 1998, Azmi was also awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in 2012 by the Government of India.

Altogether, 22 plays from the country and abroad will participate in the festival. The festival includes plays from Nepal, India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Russia, Italy, Spain, Britain, Belarus, Egypt, United States, Uruguay and Argentina.

With the slogan Theatre for social transformation: celebrating diversity, the nine-day festival will begin from November 25 and conclude on December 3 at the Mandala Theatre, Kathmandu.
