After the COVID-19 pandemic, the OTT platform has emerged robustly across the world. The films of big stars of Hollywood and Bollywood are beginning to focus more on OTT release than on the theatres.
Even in Nepal, there are OTT platforms, but they have not flourished much. The first OTT of Nepal is ‘Cinemaghar App’.
This app is available on all types of smart devices including mobile, tabloid, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and can be viewed on various devices using Chromecast technology.
In the meantime, producer and director Ashok Sharma has released his two films ‘Jai Bhole’ and ‘Rato Tika Nidharma’ on OTT instead of YouTube.
On the occasion of Dashain, both the films have been released on ‘Cinemaghar App’ from Phulpati on Sunday.
‘Jai Bhole’ was released in 2075 BS in the theatres while ‘Rato Tika Nidharma’ was released in 2076 BS.
Ashok Sharma is the producer and director of both the films.
Director Sharma said that these two films would never be released on YouTube. He said that he had released both the movies on OTT platform with the aim that gets a boost in Nepal as in other countries.
Sharma said that he chose OTT because the culture of going to the theatres to watch the movie will also deteriorate when the film is released on YouTube.
He further added that YouTube is not even safe and piracy also abounds.
“When you release a movie on YouTube, you have to give all the rights for 99 years. After 99 years, producers have no right to their property. Now technology is developing so fast that various opportunities open up. All those opportunities are lost when you give the film to YouTube,” said Sharma.
In addition, it has caused a 100 per cent loss to television, other online platforms and international performances of Nepali films, Sharma added.
Sharma believes that a film made with a large investment should not be offered for free.
“I will never upload my films on YouTube. We will make it to screen in movie theatres. There is a world of difference between watching a movie in a theatre and watching it on YouTube,” said Sharma.
“You have to pay money to watch a movie on OTT, just like in the theatre. This will also give relief to the producers and the tradition of watching movies will also be kept alive,” added Sharma.
‘Jai Bhole’ featured artistes including Swastima Khadka, Salon Basnet, Khagendra Lamichhane, Saugat Malla, Buddhi Tamang, Rajaram Paudel while ‘Rato Tika Nidharma’ stars Samragyee Rajya Lakshmi Shah, Ankit Sharma, Buddhi Tamang, Rabindra Jha, Shivahari Paudel, Neeta Dhungana and others.
