The mayor of Melbourne's western municipality of Wyndham, Preet Singh, has resigned after months of public pressure over a character reference he provided for a convicted child sex offender.
In a video statement, Singh admitted he made a serious mistake by supporting Kashyap Patel, who was convicted in 2024 of grooming and sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. He said he was unaware of the full circumstances of the case when he wrote the reference and apologised unreservedly.
The controversy sparked widespread criticism, community protests, and a vote of no confidence by Wyndham City Council. The Victorian Government also appointed a municipal monitor to oversee the council's governance during the dispute.
While accepting responsibility for his actions, Singh said the backlash had escalated into months of abuse, threats and harassment directed at both him and his family. He also criticised Victorian politicians for what he described as inconsistent treatment of similar cases.
Although stepping down as mayor, Singh will remain an elected Wyndham City councillor.
