The Nawalparasi District Court has sentenced 10 men involved in the gang-rape of a women to 13 years in prison and a fine of Rs 100,000 each.
A single bench of Judge Ashok Kumar Basnet sentenced each of them to nine years in prison for rape and another four years for gang-rape.
The men had gang-raped an 18-year-old girl of Susta Rural Municipality-3 in West Nawalparasi on September 9, 2019. The teenager was on her way to her office on a motorcycle with a friend when the group of men – from a neighboring village — kidnapped her, took her to a sugarcane field and gang-raped her, according to the survivor’s statement.
The survivor, in her statement, said that the group of 10 men had blocked the road, surrounded her and seized the motorcycle. Four men tied up the man who riding the motorcycle, while the other six took the teenager to a sugarcane field and gang-raped her.
As per the statement, the remaining four also raped her later. The survivor had fallen unconscious after she was raped by 10 men. The bike rider had later rushed her to the hospital, where she regained her consciousness.
Nine persons were arrested on the same day after the bike rider informed the police about the incident. According to the District Police Office, Nawalparasi, one accused is still on the run.
Nepal’s law provisions imprisonment of seven to 10 years if found guilty of rape and additional five years if found guilty of gang-rape. The convicts are: Surendra Yadav, Manmohan Rajbhar, Shiva Prasad Bhar, Bhim Lal Musahar, Sandip Prasad Yadav, Bhim Bahadur Musahar alias Raju, Netra Bahadur Chaudhary, Pintu Rajbhar and Amarnath Bhediyar.
Sagar Chaudhary, another accused, is still absconding, police said adding that the convicted men are between the age group of 19 and 40.
