21 people injured in clash between Kathmandu metropolis police and Thapathali squatters

At least 21 people have been injured following a clash between people from the squatter’s settlement in Thapathali area, alongside Bagmati River and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Police on Monday.

The situation became tense after squatters pelted stones at the security personnel of KMC and Bagmati River Basin Development Project (BRBDP) officials arrived at the squatters’ settlement to evict them from the area.

BRBDP had previously issued a notice to evict the area by November 20 as the settlements were built illegally on the banks of the river.

The squatters pelted stones and attacked the metropolis police personnel with sticks stating that their settlements were removed without alternative arrangement.

Bhupadev Shah, personal aide to Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, informed that fourteen KMC officers, including Raju Pandey, the Chief Superintendent of KMC police force, have been injured in the clash. All the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.
