It is rightly said that it’s never too late to start your education. Here are inspiring cases of two women – 70-year-old and 45-year-old – who have recently decided to take admission in Grade I in Bal Mandir Secondary School in Gorkha.
Bishnu Maya Gurung, 70, of Manbu Katunje, Arughat-1 of Gorkha has been attending classes of Grade I from this academic session.
Gurung, who has already become a great-grandmother of five children, is busy these days attending classes, with a desire to learn to use the mobile phone.
She had developed a desire to use the mobile phone seeing others talking with their loved ones on cell phones.
“My desire has driven me to join the class,” said Gurung, adding that she goes to school every day carrying a pen and copy in her hand.
She shared she had no desire to pursue higher education but wished to make herself able to use mobile phone and read and write well.
Gurung has proved that age is just a number for those who want to achieve something in their life.
Recalling the ordeal she faced being illiterate, Gurung said, “Once I was going to Gorkha by bus but unfortunately I took the wrong bus because I couldn’t read the words written on the bus. Luckily, someone told me that I took the wrong bus. I faced the problem because of my inability to read and write.”
Stating that it was very hard for people to live if they were illiterate, she said, “Hence, I decided to join the school.”
Gurung said she had been learning alphabet from both her teachers and her grandchildren.
She said, “I wanted to study in my childhood. But the circumstances were far from favourable. Though in old age, I would like to fulfil my long-cherished dream of being able to read and write.”
Another woman, also named Bishnu Maya Gurung, 45, of the same village has been attending classes in Grade I with a desire to read news and write her own name.
She shared that she had to seek help from others to read a text message she received on her cell phone.
“I had a strong zeal to study but I could not go to school because I had to look after my children and family. Therefore, I have joined the school with the support of my family,” she said.
The school administration, however, has yet to decide on their enrollment, since they have joined the school in the middle of the academic session.
Principal Shiva Thapa assured that the school would not let their zeal wane. “I will coordinate with the education office in regard to their admission.”
Currently, there are a total of 25 students in Grade I, said Thapa.
