Election Commission Nepal (EC) has decided to hold a by-election of the member of the House of Representatives (HoR) in Chitwan Constituency-2 on April 23 (Baisakh 10).
According to Section 68 of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074, if the position of HoR member elected under the first-past-the-post election system remains vacant for more than six months, the such vacant position shall be filled via a by-election. A meeting of the commission on Sunday took a decision to this effect, as per Election Act.
The HoR member seat from the Constituency has remained vacant after Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who was elected from Chitwan-2, lost his post as a lawmaker after being found that he had not reinstated his Nepali citizenship even though he had abandoned his status as a US citizen.
