Community forest becomes landfill site in Dhangadhi

Dhangadhi’s beautiful area, where the ‘Green Clean Dhangadhi’ campaign is being carried out, has become stinky with garbage.

The Deoria and Manhera community forest area located in Ward No. 7, which is connected to Dhangadhi Bazaar, has become smelly as the waste from the market is dumped in the forest area.

The garbage from houses, meat shops, salons, and medical facilities has been dumped indiscriminately in all three community forest areas. Similarly, alcohol bottles, medical needles, and bottles are thrown randomly.

Lakhan Chowdhury, a resident of Deoria, said that the bad smell has increased in the forest area due to people throwing garbage in the market area. He says that even living around has become a problem due to the stench of garbage thrown in the community forest. Chaudhary said, “The forest area is very dense and stinks. If you get near the forest area, you have to walk with your nose covered.”

Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City has built a cowshed in the community area for cows left loose in the area. Locals have said that the quadrupeds kept in the cow shed are dying due to a lack of proper care and food.

Chaudhary complained that even though green forest areas are considered good for the environment, the community forests that make Dhangadhi beautiful have become dumping sites. He complains that the concerned agencies are not paying attention to the fact that the forest area itself is littered with garbage.

Moti Rana, Ward Chairman of Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City-7, stated that despite several notices being issued to prevent littering, they have not been able to stop it. “We have made it strict; they are not allowed to throw it in the afternoon,” he added. “They take garbage from the market area in cars and tractors and dump it at night.”

According to Chairman Rana, the majority of the garbage was thrown on the road leading to Patela village in the Deoria Community Forest.

Tanka Bisht, Head of Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City’s Community Development and Sanitation Unit, stated that various types of waste from the market area should not be thrown in the forest area.

“We haven’t received any reports that the forest area has become stinky due to garbage,” he said. “In any case, it is not acceptable to throw garbage like that.” Chief Bista said that if they defied, the city police would be deployed for action.

Zakhor Lake is a tourist attraction in Deoria Community Forest. Even in the lake area, plastic waste is thrown here and there. Similarly, the water source is also being polluted as loose quadrupeds are also dying in the water.

Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City has chosen the Patela community forest area for the construction of an integrated waste management center. However, the construction work has not started yet.
