The second-generation leaders of the ruling CPN-UML are trying to protect the party unity by using all their means.
The leaders have believed that as the discussions within the party are positive, the party would resolve the intra-party rift soon.
On Sunday, CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli have called for party unity by presenting a six-point proposal. The very next day, leader Madhav Kumar Nepal had criticised Chair Oli’s move.
Senior leader Nepal had said that the party unity could be saved if the CPN-UML was reinstated to what it was before May 16, 2018. Chair Oli, on the other hand, had committed that he would fulfill leader Nepal’s demand but the Nepal-led faction Oli’s proposal as conspiracy.
In Oli’s call for unity, it has been mentioned that the CPN-UML leaders must withdraw their signatures from the writ petition jointly filed by the opposition at the Supreme Court against the dissolution of the House of Representatives. Chair Oli also proposed to reinstate the House to maintain party unity.
Addressing Oli’s proposal, leader Nepal said that if the House was reinstated by the Prime Minister, they would withdraw their signatures from the petition.
Meanwhile, the second-generation leaders are trying their level best to protect the party unity. Leaders of both the faction of CPN-UML are currently holding unofficial meetings. The leaders have said that talks were held for around five hours on Tuesday as well. The discussions are majorly centered on the issues raised by Chairman Oli and leader Nepal.
The party members are making efforts to seek alternatives to retain party unity even during disputes.
Subash Chandra Nembang, who was also present in the meeting, said that discussions were going on to reach a concrete conclusion. “As the meetings are being held on a positive note, we are hopeful that we will reach a positive conclusion soon,” he said.
The CPN-UML members have suggested that if the party unity is not protected, then both the factions would lose the upcoming election, and opposition parties would be benefitted.
Standing Committee member Bhim Prasad Acharya from the Nepal-led faction said that regular talks were being held over the proposals made by Chairman Oli and leader Nepal. “Everyone’s will is to protect the party unity,” he said.
Leaders Nembang, Bishnu Prasad Poudel, Pradeep Gyawali and Bishnu Rimal from Oli’s faction and leaders Acharya, Gokarna Bista, Ghanashyam Bhusal, and Yogesh Bhattarai from Nepal’s faction are holding meetings to resolve the differences.
