CPN-UML Taskforce Reaches Consensus

The CPN-UML taskforce assigned to suggest ways to resolve the intraparty disputes claimed Friday that a consensus was reached between the two factions of the party. A marathon meeting of the taskforce that continued for more than seven hours at Singha Durbar today succeeded to find a middle way to settle the intra-party differences.
After the meeting, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, party Spokesperson, told journalists that the leaders of the taskforce reached an agreement to sort out all differences. He said, “We have reached a consensus on the main issues.”
According to Gyawali, the taskforce had already prepared a consensus document but they needed to work on its language. “We will meet again tomorrow and prepare the final document,” he said.
However, Gokarna Bista, a taskforce member close to Madhav Kumar Nepal, said that except for a few issues, the taskforce had almost reached a consensus.
He said the taskforce would continue the meeting on Saturday and reach an agreement on the remaining issues. Raghuji Panta, a taskforce member, also close to leader Nepal, said, “In the meeting today, we discussed the draft of consensus documents.”
He said the taskforce would prepare the document by incorporating suggestions of the leaders from both factions. While chairman KP Sharma Oli is leading a faction, Nepal is leading the rival faction in the ruling party.
He, however, said the draft would require consent of both party chairman Oli and leader Nepal, since they were the ones who formed the taskforce.
The taskforce was formed in May this year to suggest ways to prepare the modality to forge consensus and resurrect the party as it was on May 16, 2018, before the unification of CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre).
Since its revival on Monday, the taskforce has been holding a series of dialogues everyday to resolve the differences surfaced in the party.
The taskforce comprises five leaders each from the two factions.
Senior leaders Subash Nembang and Bhim Rawal are leading the taskforce, which comprises Bishnu Paudel, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Shankar Pokharel and Bishnu Rimal from party chairman Oli’s side and Ghanashyam Bhusal, Gokarna Bista, Surendra Pandey and Panta from the side of senior leader Nepal.
