Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki has viewed that the country is on the verge of digital transformation with the formulation of Digital Nepal Framework 2019.
Minister Karki said so while addressing the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) round table organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Rwanda today.
The Digital Nepal Framework is a blueprint that provides a roadmap to how digital initiatives can contribute to economic growth; find innovative ways to solve major challenges in a shorter period with small resources, and identify opportunities for Nepal to participate in the global economy, Minister Karki explained about the Framework.
It encompasses One Nation, Eight Sectors, and 80 Digital Initiatives out of which most of the activities at present are focused in laying digital foundation. The Government of Nepal aims to engrain all activities to be implemented digitally by 2025, with policy reforms and the formulation of new legislation, he added.
The Minister expressed the government’s vow to empower Nepali citizens through digital transformation.
“Further, our government is committed to connect the unconnected by using universal service obligation fund, in order to improve the capacity of individuals to engage in digital economy, and to enhance the foundations for digital government”.
Noting the theme of the Conference, Minister Karki said, “This year theme on, “Connecting the unconnected to achieve sustainable development” is most appropriate in the context of Nepal where we have challenges of difficult geographical terrain, poverty, and the digital literacy. I feel that the ITU Partner to Connect Digital Coalition Roundtable discussion is suitable forum for strengthening our co-operation to reduce the digital divide and enhance our peoples’ digital capability.”
