Dr. Govinda KC has given a week’s ultimatum to the government to stop interference in the works of the Medical Education Commission.
The Medical Education Commission (MEC) is the regulatory body of overall medical education in the country.
The government appoints vice-chairperson from among the doctors, who have made special contribution to the field of medicine, as the executive of the MEC while Prime Minister is its chairman and Ministers for Education and Health co-chairpersons.
Issuing a statement on Sunday, Dr. KC said that the government was interfering in the activities of the MEC, which is responsible for maintaining quality, professionalism, institutional accountability, geographical balance and social justice in the medical education sector.
“One of the major demands of my latest hunger strike was to stop unnecessary interference in the works of the MEC. The Minister for Education and the ministry’s secretary had then assured to stop such activities,” read the statement.
The government had reached a 10-point agreement with Dr. KC on September 24 on the 13th day of his 20th hunger strike. One of the agreements was to solve the problems related to the deployment of employees.
“Despite the agreement, the minister and the secretary haven’t fulfilled their assurances. New officials appointed at the MEC without coordination have affected the the commission’s work further. It shows that some are working to make the commission unsuccessful,” the statement read.
In a bid to allow the MEC to work freely and uplift the medical education sector of the country, Dr. KC has given the ultimatum of a week to solve the above-mentioned problem at the earliest.
“The Minister for Education has not come in contact with us despite our continuous effort to learn about the progress made in the agreement. If the problem at the MEC is not solved in a week, we will be compelled to stage another hunger strike,” the statement read.
