Embankment being built along Melamchi to protect settlement

Embankment is being constructed along the Melamchi corridor to protect the Melamchi settlement. Work of installing nets for the protection of the human settlements located near the Melamchi River is now moving in full swing.

Mayor of Melamchi Municipality Aitman Tamang said that embankments were being constructed to save the roads, markets and school areas that could be eroded by the river. It is being constructed from Helambu to Dolalghat of Kavre, which was damaged by a flood in the Melamchi on July 15 last year.

A local, Rabin Kakshapati of Chanaute, expressed happiness that the construction of the embankment had helped in controlling the flow of the river by protecting the settlements and roads.

The embankment construction work was started at a cost of Rs. 40 million by the Bagmati Province Land and Water Resources Management Office. Out of the 31 schemes for temporary protection, 29 schemes are being implemented.

Four thousand households would benefit from the embankment. A five meter high and 55 meter long embankment had been constructed using dead meter wire. According to Bishnu Gautam, Principal of Jalpa Secondary School, the construction of the embankment had saved Melamchi Valley Campus of Gyalthum, Third Secondary School of Talamarang and Jalpa Secondary School of Bahunepati and local houses and land from river erosion.

The victims of last year’s flood had complained that the embankment was constructed in an unnecessary manner.

Mayor Tamang alleged that the embankment was constructed secretly within the budget sent by the province government and without coordinating with the municipality. He urged all parties to work in coordination with the municipality while carrying any project with the budget provided by the federal and provincial governments.
