Gulmi youth kills leopard barehanded

A youth from Ward No. 6 of Resunga Municipality in Gulmi district has killed a leopard while defending himself from the animal.

The individual has been identified as 30-year-old Yam Bahadur Kunwar.

As usual Kunwar, a local poultry farmer, had woke up on Sunday and started his daily works.

When he looked at the pen, he saw a leopard feasting on his chickens early in the morning. Seeing the leopard destroying his livelihood, Kunwar got so angry that he rushed towards the farm barehanded and tried to chase away the leopard.

However, the leopard pounced on him culminating in a fight between him and the beast. Kunwar was not carrying any weapon, and the fight lasted for about 10 minutes until the animal died.

“I didn’t want to kill the leopard. But while trying to save myself from its attack, I tried anything possible and it got killed,” said Kunwar.

“If I had lost hope on myself, I would have died,” Kunwar added.

Kunwar, however, sustained some injuries during the fight. He has been receiving treatment at Gulmi Hospital.

The leopard had killed 61 chickens by the time Kunwar saw it

“The leopard’s body has been disposed after completing necessary legal process. No weapon injuries were found in the leopard,” said Prabhat Sapkota, chief at Gulmi Division Forest Office.
