Heavy rainfall expected today


The country is going to receive heavy rainfall along with thunder and lightning in most parts of the country on Saturday.

This year’s monsoon system has activated in Province 1, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali Provinces since Friday. “The monsoon is yet to be activated in Sudhur Paschim,” said Hira Bhattarai, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

All the provinces except for Sudhur Paschim will have rainfall on Saturday due to the effect of the monsoon. “The coverage area of the rainfall will be large on Saturday,” Bhattarai said.

The monsoon system arrived in Province 1 on June 5 and in Madhes Pradesh, Bagmati Pradesh, and Gandaki Pradesh on June 9. This year’s monsoon had entered the eastern part of Nepal before the normal time. Normally, monsoon arrives in Nepal on June 13.

Chandragadhi Airport in Jhapa district received the highest rainfall, 180 mm, in the last 24 hours, prompting the cancellation of night flights on Thursday. Kathmandu received 60.5 mm rainfall and Nepalgunj received 21 mm during the period. In the last 24 hours, rainfall in 25 centres was measured more than 35 mm and one centre (Jhapa) measured over 100 mm rainfall.
