Landslides destroy 150 houses of single ward in Humla’s Sarkegard Municipality

At least 150 houses were destroyed by landslides across Ward No. 1 of Sarkegard Rural Municipality in Humla district alone.

The landslides were a result of continuous heavy rain for almost a week. Moreover, officials and locals informed that lands in several settlements across the ward have started to crumble as well.

Local victims informed that the landslides have caused damages in five villages of the ward.

“There were some houses at extreme risk of landslide for some time. However, even places away from the risk zones have incurred damages. Lands in several areas have started eroding, increasing risks in other places as well,” said Ruplal Rawat, a landslide victim from Jaire Village in the ward.

According to locals, the whole ward is at risk of landslide now.

“Remains of damaged houses can be seen buried in the landslides. Victims are bound to stay under tarpaulin or in the houses of their relatives. It is the biggest damage faced by this ward,” said Gokul Budha, former chairman of the ward.

The local government informed that police have started collecting details by reaching the victims, but a concrete data of damage is yet to arrive.

Meanwhile, victims argued that they were facing several problems to pass a day while passing the night was more troublesome. Informing that they have received food and clothes, the victims stressed that they needed a proper place to shelter their heads.
