National Census In ‘Wait And Watch’ Situation

Preparations are being made to begin the 12th National Census programme, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from mid-July.

Dundiraj Lamichhane, chief of the Department of Statistics, said, “If the second wave of the pandemic comes into control, the National Census will be resumed from July by taking the approval of the government. We have aimed to complete the census within September.”

He informed that the census would be carried out on the basis of the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Population regarding the status of the pandemic in the nation and the decisions made by the government.

Earlier, the department had deployed superintendents for the census. The superintendents have already completed more than half of the training programme.

The procedure to deploy 43,000 enumerators to reach each and every citizen directly will begin from July, informed the department. After the completion of training to the enumerators, they will be immediately deployed in the field to begin the census.

The department is also preparing to seek a recommendation from the government regarding the situation of the census programme if the pandemic does not come into control.

“Around 85 per cent works of the census, which is being held after 10 years, has already completed,” said Lamichhane.

Earlier in May, the meeting of the Council of Ministers had decided to postpone the census.
