Nepal, China hold consultation meeting on border issues


Nepal and the People’s Republic of China Thursday held a consultation meeting on border affairs. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the two countries held the meeting virtually.

Lok Bahadur Thapa, the Head of the North East Asia Division of Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, and Hong Liang, the Director General of the Department of Border and Ocean Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry, led their respective delegations to the meeting.

The meeting took stock of overall state of Nepal-China relations, and held discussion on various matters relating to boundary and border management between the two countries, read the statement.

The two countries agreed to recommence the Rasuwagadhi/Kerung Border trade route, while establishing an epidemic prevention and control mechanism.

With a view to supporting livelihood of people in the northern Himalayan region of Nepal, the two sides decided to open Hilsa/Purang border port for transportation of goods and construction materials from China, by putting in place necessary COVID-19 health protocol and guidelines, read the statement.

Underscoring the importance of joint inspection of Nepal-China boundary, the two sides agreed to initiate the process for activating the existing bilateral mechanism through mutual consultation.

The Chinese delegation comprised the senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various other Ministries of China, Foreign Affairs Office and other Departments in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kathmandu.
