‘Nepal, India and China need to join hands to tackle with emerging geopolitical challenges’

CPN Maoist (Centre) general secretary Dev Prasad Gurung has viewed that Nepal, India and China should join hands to overcome challenges that are emerging in the changed, new geopolitical context.

Speaking at the programme organized by Sammunati Foundation on the topic of “Chinese Development and Regional Cooperation, The Changing Global Context”, he argued that the United States and European countries are in a desperate position to protect the status quo of the international world order.

Gurung emphasized that the foreign policy of Nepal should be guided on the basis of the principle of the Non-Alignment and Panchsheel.

Former Ambassador to China and Chief Secretary of the government of Nepal Leela Mani Paudyal said that per capita debt of Nepali is hovering approximately around Rs 68,000. He said that the government of India has been building infrastructure by taking loans from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a lower rate of interest, so Nepal should look for a similar portfolio.

The former chief secretary said that our debtor provides subsidies in their own countries but in contrast, they ask us to stop subsidies. He further added that debtors tinkers with our policy by putting various conditions before providing loans.

Paudyal said that foreign direct investment (FDI) is necessary for rapid development.

Similarly, former governor Deependra Bahadur Kshetry said that progress made in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) and the English language have been favoring India to attract foreign investment. So Nepal should create a favorable environment to attract foreign investment for which political stability is a basic prerequisite.
