The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution with a large majority that condemned Russia’s barbaric attack on Ukraine and attempted annexation of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine.
Nepal has also voted in favor of Ukraine while other Kyiv’s allies have committed to more military aid after intense Russian missile strikes.
In the text titled “Territorial integrity of Ukraine: defending the principles of the Charter of the United Nations” out of the 193-member General Assembly, 143 countries including Nepal voted in favor of the resolution that called Russia’s move illegal.
Five countries including Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua, Russia, and Syria voted against the resolution. 35 nations, including India and China, were absent in the voting.
The representative of Nepal said the conflict in Ukraine is deeply concerning. The United Nations Charter clearly stipulates that all Member States must settle disputes through peaceful means while upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nepal will vote in favor of the draft resolution today, he said.
The assembly declared that the acts of Russia are a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and inconsistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
After the resolution passed, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Twitter he was “grateful to 143 states that supported historic #UNGA resolution …(Russia’s) attempt at annexation is worthless.”
“We condemn Russia’s illegal so-called referendum within Ukraine’s internationally-recognized borders and demand it reverses its annexation declaration,” reads the resolution.
Recently, the Kremlin has launched missile strikes on cities across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, in some of the most wide-ranging attacks since the invasion began in February. Russia started striking Ukrainian cities following the major explosion on the only bridge between the Russian Federation and Crimea disrupting the bridge.
Footage obtained from various Ukrainian cities show that the Kremlin has intentionally targeted civilian and energy infrastructures. This included a pedestrian bridge and a park.
