Police units still rely on rented rooms to provide security, says IGP Singh

Inspector General of Nepal Police, Dhiraj Pratap Singh, said that all the police units are not able to provide services from their own buildings and barracks as of now.

Speaking on the occasion of the 67th Police Day on Monday morning at the Police Headquarters, Naxal, IGP Singh requested the government to make necessary arrangements. The Inspector General said that some police offices and barracks are forced to provide their service taking shelter in the houses of people and private agencies.

Appalled by the sorry condition of Nepal Police, some generous hearts of local people have donated their lands to set up police units.

He mentioned that Nepal Police is providing services through more than 3,200 police units at present, and said that Nepal Police is the most accessible organisation in the country.

He said, “Last year, we received more than 191 ropanies of land in donation from common citizens.

All the police units are not able to use their own building to serve, even now many police offices, barracks are operating from rented house or those of other agencies, so I expect necessary initiatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs to establish private offices by making proper use of the land given by the common citizens.”

He also said that still local communities from over 1,200 places have demanded that police units be set up in those places and that because of lack of land and enough manpower, the Headquarters has not been able to do so in time. He said that Nepal Police is connected virtually with more than 2.6 million people through social media.

He also said that compared to the financial year 2077/078 B.S, the total number of crime registrations increased by 17 per cent in 2078/79 B.S. But the serious and organised crimes have come down with little increase in financial crime, he said.

At present, Nepal Police is providing services through a total of 3,200 police units and is the most accessible organisation in the country.

He said that last year, 17 people who had committed crimes in Nepal and were hiding in different parts of the world were brought to Nepal with the help of Interpol and this year also seven people have been arrested from Qatar and Macao and legal action has been taken.

Inspector General Singh said that last year, 11,500kg marijuana, 69kg heroin and 50kg opium were seized and 5,779 people, including 221 foreigners, were brought into legal actions.

He said that compared to the financial year 2077/078, the revenue collection of last year has also increased by 43 per cent. He mentioned that Nepal Police collected more than Rs. 4.16 billion rupees in revenue last year (2078/79).
