Samajbadi Party quits government over statute amendment row

  • December 24, 2019

Samajbadi Party Nepal, a key coalition partner of the KP Sharma Oli-led government, has withdrawn its support to the government today.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law Upendra Yadav stepped down from his post, effective from today.

Yadav tendered his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today afternoon. His resignation is followed by the PM’s refusal to endorse the constitution amendment proposal tabled by Yadav during yesterday’s cabinet meeting.

Consequently, Minister for Urban Development Mohammad Istiyak Rai also resigned.

Yadav’s then Federal Socialist Party had joined the government after an agreement with Nepal Communist Party chairs Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal on May 28, 2018.

As per the agreement, the two leaders would register constitution amendment proposal in the Parliament after needful discussions. However, Oli has consistently sidelined the agenda.
