Extreme heat has affected life in the Terai region including Sarlahi district for the past week despite occasional rainfall.
The weather becomes extremely hot soon after the sky becomes clear after rainfall. The scorching heat makes it difficult for people to get out of the house in the daytime.
Ram Prakash Mahato, a local of Chandranagar Rural Municipality-2, Babargunj,in Sarlahi, said that people from the rural areas live in the shade of trees to avoid the heat. “The heat has become unbearable. We are spending our days sitting in the shade of trees and bushes,” said Mahato. “There has not been enough rainfall in this area this year, so it is very hot.”
Tej Narayan Chaudhary of Jabdi in Lalbandi Municipality-3, said that the extreme heat has made him restless. “Because of the heat, you cannot go out and you cannot sleep at night as well,” said Chaudhary.
The maximum temperature in the Terai region has been around 35-36 degree Celsius this time. The elderly, disabled, farmers, and labourers are more affected by the heat while the students attending schools have suffered the most.
Due to the extreme heat without rain, the number of patients with heat-related problems is also increasing in hospitals.
Doctors recommend drinking enough water at this time and eating only fresh and clean food.
Similarly, paddy plantation has been affected because of sunny weather. The first week of July has already passed but there has not been enough rain in Sarlahi and other districts of Madhes Province this year.
Although it rained normally for two days a week ago, it has not rained since then, said locals.
Farmer Kedar Karki of Haribhawan in Lalbandi Municipality-4 complained that the Bagmati Irrigation Project has not yet released water in the canal and the farmers have not been able to plant paddy as there is not enough water to irrigate the paddy fields.
