Sukute Accident: 17 lives lost, report says bus was ‘over speeding

Sunday’s bus accident near Sukute in which 17 people lost their lives and over 50 were injured has been attributed to overload and speeding – said police.

The bus (Ba 2 Kha 7245) en route to Kathmandu from Maga Deurali of Dolakha fell off about 35m into the Sunkoshi River at Sukute Chautara Sangachowkgadi, Sindhupalchowk on Sunday afternoon at around 1 o’ clock.

According to District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk, 14 people were killed on the spot, one died en route the hospital and two while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Amongst the decaesed was a three-month infant.

Police have identified the dead bodies of 10 passengers. Identities of the rest are being ascertained.Th dead bodies will be handed over to family members after the post-mortem.

According to the survivors of the accident, the bus met with the accident due to over speeding. They also reported that there was some problem with the bus, too.

First responders to the accident were a rafting team who while taking rest saw passengers floating on the river after the bus plunged into the river and immediately worked towards rescuing them.
