When Maitighar turned into river

Sudden downpour on Friday morning badly affected vehicular movements in the central part of the capital city.

As the roads turned into rivers, a numbers of cars, taxis and two wheelers got stuck at Maitighar, which looked like flooded rivers for a while.

As many bike riders and taxi passengers got stranded on the flooded road, traffic police were seen rescuing them. The passengers as well as the police and vehicles had to wade through the murky flood water.

Even the rivers like Dhobikhola were flooded. However not all parts of the city witnessed the downpour; only the western, central and northern parts of Kathmandu received heavy rains. Areas like Koteshwor, Pepsicola and New Baneshwor received only light rains when the Maitighar and Babarmahal roads were heavily inundated.

According to Manju Basi, senior meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Kathmandu received 46. 6 mm rainfall in one hour between 10 am to 12 noon. Meanwhile Bhaktapur received 27 mm rainfall while the areas like Koteshwor, Pepsicola and New Road received light rainfall.
