There were 16 games to get our heads’ around on Tuesday evening as the EFL cup enter its second round.
Newcastle 1-0 Blackburn
Newcastle haven’t won a trophy since the mid-60s and they made it a step closer to Wembley here after beating Blackburn at St James Park.
Ryan Fraser opened the scoring, netting his first goal for the Magpies, and that was how it stayed for Steve Bruce’s men who made it through to the third round.
West Ham 3-0 Charlton
After a nightmare Premier League start, the Hammers got off to winning ways this season after dispatching Charlton.
Sebastien Haller tapped in from close range after 23 minutes and then doubled his account just moments later.
But it was Felipe Anderson who cemented the result with 10 minutes of the game to go.
Bournemouth 0-0 Crystal Palace
This was a pretty abysmal encounter between one of the Premier League’s favourites to get relegated this season, and a club who finally slid out of the division last time out.
A game devoid of any talking points until it went to penalties which Bournemouth won 11-10.
Burton 1-3 Aston Villa
What amounted to a strong Aston Villa side went to Burton, and shockingly conceded after only two minutes thanks to Colin Daniel’s finish.
But the Premier League club equalised on the stroke of half time as Ollie Watkins netted from a yard out on his debut.
It was looking like a tough night for the visiting side as they struggled in the second half, but right on the stroke of full time, up stepped Jack Grealish who won the game on the same day he celebrated a new contract.
Keinan Davies completed the scoring in injury time to add some gloss to the result.
