It was an eventful night as Chelsea edged past Brighton 3-1 at the AMEX Stadium.
Goals from Jorginho, Reece James and Kurt Zouma secured all three points, despite the hosts hitting back through Leandro Trossard.
All eyes were on Kai Havertz and Timo Werner at the AMEX Stadium for their competitive Chelsea debuts, but it was a mixed bag for the new German imports.
Werner looked sharp without having much influence on the game, but his speed threatened to hurt Brighton all night – and it was the 24-year-old who won the decisive penalty after nipping past Matty Ryan.
Havertz – playing on the right hand side – struggled though, completing just 22 passes, one dribble and looking a yard off Premier League pace.
No snap judgements should be made after 90 minutes. However, this just shows how despite their sizeable price tags, every player needs time to adapt.
Brighton may have ended the night with nothing, but their performance offered plenty of encouragement nonetheless.
Ben White impressed in defence alongside Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster, while Yves Bissouma and Steven Alzate nullified a superior midfield for large parts.
Former Chelsea graduate Tariq Lamptey also looks a steal at just £3m after having Marcos Alonso on skates for 90 minutes.
They just lacked quality in crucial moments and saw one sloppy mistake pounced upon (in addition to a Reece James wonder goal) – but Graham Potter is building something exciting.
