Spurs would have taken an early lead in this one were it not for the excellence of Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
But they did go in front in the 25th minute, when Harry Kane’s low cross was turned in at the back post by Lucas Moura.
It was almost 2-0 a few minutes later when a great effort from Son Heung-min hit the foot of the post.
And Son rattled the woodwork again five minutes before half-time when his long range strike came back off the post.
The match looked to be heading towards a 1-0 win for Spurs until in stoppage time, Newcastle were awarded a penalty for an Eric Dier handball.
Callum Wilson converted from 12-yards to snatch a point for the Magpies.
