Scotland trounce Nepal by eight wickets


Batters flopped as Nepal ended the trilateral series under ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Scotland with three defeats and one win.

Nepal conceded back-to-back losses on Saturday and Sunday against Namibia and Scotland. Scotland defeated Nepal by eight wickets and took revenge for a five-wicket loss last Wednesday.

Namibia registered a 63-run victory over Nepal on Saturday to claim the second win in Scotland. The win put Namibia one point above Nepal at the fifth position with 18 points.

Nepal remained at the sixth position with 17 points from 19 matches. Namibia also defeated Nepal by 40 runs in the opener of the series.

Nepal could reclaim fifth place with the win over Scotland on its last outings.

Unfortunately, the win was not possible on Sunday as the hosts destroyed Nepali batting and recorded the 16th win of League 2.

The victory strengthened Scotland’s second position with 34 points off 24 matches.

Oman leads the table with 44 points playing all 36 matches.

Put to bat first in Glasgow, Nepal mustered 128 runs in 35.5 overs. Scotland eased to the victory in 19 overs with 130/2 on the scoreboard.

Scotland came up with an impressive start as Kyle Coetzer and Christopher Mc Bride paired for a 42-run opening partnership.

McBride (10) was trapped lbw off Nepali Captain Sandeep Lamichhane in the 8th over. Coetzer, then, put up an 87-run partnership with one-man down Calum Macleod to guide Scotland closer to the victory.

MacLeod hammered three maximum and ten boundaries to chip in with a half-century knock of 29-ball 64. With five runs required to victory, MacLeod holed out to Aasif Sheikh off Sompal Kami.

Opener Coetzer clubbed seven fences in his not-out 48-ball 44 knock. Captain Richie Berrington (not out 4) smashed a boundary to ease Scotland to win.

Earlier, opener Aasif Sheikh top scored for Nepal with 40 runs off 58 balls. Dev Khanal and Rohit Paudel added ten runs each. Binod Bhandari collected 13 runs whereas Captain Lamichhane chipped in with 27-ball 22 from the tail.

Hamza Tahir was the pick of the bowlers for Scotland with a four-wicket haul. Mark Watt claimed three wickets and Gavin Main dismissed two batters to demolish the Nepali batting.

On Saturday, Nepal was dismissed for 136 runs in 37.5 overs while chasing the target of 200 runs set by Namibia.

Dipendra Singh Airee scored the highest 38 runs for Nepal. Opener Aasif Sheikh (34), Mohammad Aadil Alam (20), Dev Khanal (11), Pawan Sarraf (not out 18) and Rohit Paudel (17) contributed to Nepal.

The five-wicket haul from Bernard Scholtz and three dismissals from Jan Frylinck was enough for Namibia to ruin Nepali batting.

Electing to bat first, Namibia scored 199 runs with the loss of all wickets in the 49.2 overs.

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus delivered the highest 53 runs for his team. David Wiese (34), Divan La Cock (27), JJ Smit (27), Jan Nicol Loftie Eaton (19) and Ruben Trumpelmann (19) contributed double figures.

Captain Sandeep Lamichhane claimed four wickets whereas Sompal Kami and Dipendra Singh Airee grabbed two wickets apiece for Nepal.
