Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, has ordered a 14-day self-isolation for anyone arriving in the country as a measure towards preventing the spread of coronavirus.
The PM also announced a ban on all foreign cruise liners arriving into Australian ports for 30 days.
“All people coming to Australia will be required, will be required, I stress, to self isolate for 14 days.” Morrison told reporters in Sydney.
Moreover, unnecessary gatherings of more than 500 people will be banned from Monday, but this does not apply to workplaces, schools, universities, supermarkets or public transport.
Morrison also said Australians should avoid shaking hands on the context of social distancing.
“The social distancing practices we are encouraging are being expanded. There are no more handshakes. That is a new move, and that is something I will practice,” he said.
Australia has reported nearly 250 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, with three deaths.
