The Economic Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Global Liveability Index is out – and three Australian cities, Melbourne (2), Sydney (3), and Adelaide (10) are in the top ten. The report, an annual publication, ranks cities on various categories – in 2019, they were ranked under stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure – in 140 destinations.
Melbourne, which was once the straight title champion for 7 consecutive years (2011 – 2017) retained its second position, narrowly losing again to Austria’s Vienna, yet again. Vienna scored 99.1 out of 100 and Melbourne 98.4, losing their claim to be the ‘World’s Most Liveable City’ by a mere 0.7 points.
While Melbourne showed consistency, Sydney on the other hand showed tremendous improvement – from 5th position in 2018 to 3rd position in 2019. At 98.1, Sydney missed the second position by a mere 0.3 points. The improvement in the ranking were attributed to ‘improvement in culture and environment’. Meanwhile Adelaide also showed consistency – retaining its 1oth position.
