NRNA (Non-Resident Nepalese Association) has published a press release regarding the recent incidents surrounding personal items being confiscated from migrant workers in TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport) of Nepal.  NRNA has requested to ease the customs process for migrant workers in the country’s only international airport.

NRNA has expressed that confiscation has affected hardworking migrants economically and emotionally. “Migrant workers have been contributing largely to country’s economy through remittance, however confiscation of gifts meant for their family members has caused negativity towards Nepal Government, Airport authority and staffs”, the press release read.

Further, the association has emphasized that before implementing new rules, information should be provided publicly at least six months ahead. Likewise, in case of excess items there should be an excess fee, so that the passengers can pay and take their items. NRNA has requested the government of Nepal to implement the rule but with proper information flow beforehand to avoid any kind of problems to returning migrant workers.

The latest tightening of baggage rule has caused returning migrant workers emotional and financial issues. While it has also caused public backlash against the new rule.
