NSW: Prisoner escapes from hospital, police search underway

Police are looking for a prisoner who escaped from a hospital in state’s Mid North Coast on Sunday morning. The escapee, a 28 year old Matthew Furner absconded from Port Macquarie Base Hospital around 8 a.m. today (25th August, 2019).

He was able to evade the watch of the guards, and did not stop even though one of the correctives officers discharged a ‘warning shot’ from his firearm during the escape, police has said.

A large-scale search involving local police, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, the Dog Unit and PolAir, is now underway for the 28-year-old.

He was last seen running west from the Oxley Highway near Lake Road. Members of the community are being told to remain alert – they have asked the public to avoid confrontation with the individual, if sighted. “Do not approach him if sighted, instead contact Triple Zero (000) immediately”, NSW Police has said.

Matthew Furner is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 180cm tall, with a slim build and a shaved head with a rats tail. He was last seen wearing prison greens (t-shirt and tracksuit pants).
