NSW reports locally acquired Covid-19 infection after Sydney airport driver tests positive

Sydney, Australia:

NSW has recorded another locally acquired infection of Covid-19 after a Sydney airport driver tested positive for the infection – breaking the state’s 13 days of zero locally acquired cases of Covid-19. The last time the state reported a locally acquired infection was on December 3rd after a hotel quarantine staffer tested positive for the virus.

Today’s case, a 45 year old man, was transporting international airline crews to and from the airport. He started showing symptoms on Saturday, got himself tested on Tuesday, and the result showed positive on Wednesday. It is believed the man worked several shifts in between showing symptoms and testing himself – however, he did abide by necesarry health and safety protocols.

NSW Health has said the results of genome sequencing to trace the exact origin of the virus is yet to be received. Meanwhile, his close contacts have been tested.

NSW, and Australia in general has enjoyed tremendous success towards ensuring their community is free from Covid-19 – thanks to timely efforts and strict vigilance. This case is NSW’s second case of a locally acquired infection since 7th November.
