Spandan Thapa, a 13 y/o from Melbourne has bagged a silver medal in the Australian Taekwondo Nationals 2019. The competition, organised by Australian Taekwondo was held in Carrara Stadium, Goldcoast, QLD from 6th September to 8th September. Spandan achieved his feat in the ‘featherweight’ category.
Residing in Melbourne’s St. Albans, Spandan is the son of parents Shankar Thapa and Sumi Shrestha – both of Nepalese origin. Father Shankar is originally from Kapilavastu, Rupandehi and mother Sumi from Tansen, Palpa. According to the parents, Spandan has been enthusiastic about all forms of sports since he was a kid – he made it to the nationals after passing the Victoria State Selection Tournament.
Starting early, Spandan started participating and winning various tournaments since 2016. He is a member at Taekwondo Plus Australia, and is seen practicing there regularly.
While him being a dedicated sportsperson, several community and non-community forces also played an active role towards Spandan’s success. His parents have been an inspiration for him, continously encouraging him along his path. Melbourne Nepalese Community West, a community organisation where Shankar Thapa serves as the President has also helped Spandan in his journey to achieve national glory.
The Nepalese community in Australia is jubilant to hear the news, and praises are pouring in from all corners.
