Vic Police issues warning for today’s planned protest in CBD

Following notice was issued by Victoria Police for a planned protest scheduled today 24 May 2019.

“PLANNED PROTEST – Victoria Police is aware of protest activity planned in Melbourne on Friday 24 May.

Those in the CBD may notice a larger than normal police presence due to a scheduled protest activity.

Community safety is Victoria Police’s number one priority and there will be a strong police presence throughout the day to ensure people are safe.

Victoria Police is well equipped and prepared to deploy resources, respond and intervene when needed.

A number of traffic management points will be in place with Bourke, Swanston, Collins and Flinders streets to be affected at various times from approximately 12pm until 3pm.

Victoria Police asks that people be patient, plan their journey and allow extra time where possible when in the CBD on Friday (24 May).

Individuals have the right to lawfully attend events and protest, however we ask that people do so peacefully and respectfully without impacting on the rest of the community.

Victoria Police will not tolerate those who break the law or engage in antisocial or violent behaviour.

As always, anyone coming to an event in Melbourne looking to disrupt others or create conflict and incite violence can expect a firm response from police.”

Previously, an unplanned protest was conducted by vegan group in Melbourne CBD on 8 April 2019. The vegan protest caused chaos by blocking traffics on Monday morning peak hour. After the protesters refused to step aside, as many as 38 protesters were arrested and charged.
