Victoria recorded 42 new cases of Covid-19 overnight on Wednesday. Wednesday’s number also brought down Melbourne’s 14-day daily coronavirus case to 49.6.
Earlier, Premier Daniel Andrews, while announcing Victoria’s roadmap to a Covid-19 normal, had said Melbourne would have to post a 14 day average of 30-50 cases per day before proceeding to its second step.
Premier Andrews expressed optimism in the decrease of daily number of cases, but warned that the average would have to remain in that bandwidth a little longer before Melbourne is allowed to open.
Melbourne is expected to move to the next stage of its Covid-19 recovery roadmap on September 28 – provided daily cases average of a fortnight are between 30-50.
Wednesday’s numbers therefore provides optimism.
Meanwhile, Regional Victoria is gearing up to move to its next step from Thursday itself.
The relaxation in measures will begin from Thursday, 00:00 am onward, i.e 17th September, 2020.
According to Premier Andrews “Regional Victorians will have more than four reasons to leave their homes”. However, Premier Andrews urged Victorians to be alert and careful, as the pandemic hasn’t entirely passed, and there are still a few active cases in the region.
On Wednesday, Premier Andrews also said there were 991 active coronavirus cases in Victoria – it is the first time the number has been below 1,000 in weeks.
