122 Chinese nationals arrested from Kathmandu on suspicion of cyber fraud

A widespread raid by Crime Division of Metropolitan Police Office, Kathmandu has landed 122 Chinese citizens in police nets on suspicion of cyber fraud. A raid which extended to several areas of Kathmandu from Budhanilkantha, Maharajgunj to Manamaiju exposed the hacking ring. The police have confiscated laptops and other electrical devices from the Chinese nationals.

“The acts of these Chinese people, who had entered Nepal in visiting visa were found  to be suspicious,” said Sahakul Thapa, Police Sub-inspector, Crime Division, Metropolitan Police Office, Kathmandu.

Thapa said that 122 individuals were arrested and investigations were going on Chinese citizens residing at Chabahil, Bouddha and Koteshwor.

The police had received information about the suspicious activities of Chinese citizens a week ago. The Central Investigation Bureau, Crime Division and Metropolitan Police Office, Kathmandu had jointly raided the houses, based on the special information they had received.

A detailed investigation is still due, however, foreign nationals residing in groups is suspicious per se, said Thapa.

Interestingly, most of the Chinese nationals were also found to have overstayed their visa.

As per the initial statement given by the accused Chinese citizens, they had been working as labourers in a few IT companies, the name of the companies that they worked for, however is still unknown.
