Fourteen farmers from Jumla have been feted with Karnali Chief Minister’s Best Farmer award. Agriculture Development Office and Livestock Service and Veterinary Hospital of Jumla provided the award to the farmers amid a programme on Friday.
Jumla’s Chief District Officer Bijaya Kumari Prasai and District Coordination Committee chief Gaurinanda Acharya handed over certificates and cash to the awarded farmers.
“Seven farmers have been feted for their contribution and achievements in agriculture while seven others were feted for animal husbandry and poultry,” said Ganesh Adhikari, chief at Jumla’s Agriculture Development Office.
Among the seven awarded in livestock and poultry field, Ganga Devi Upadhyay of Tatopani was awarded for Kalij farming, Kamala Budhthapa of Chandannath for goat farming, Gopal Mahat of Guthichaur for buffalo farming, and Ammar Singh Bhraki and Janga Bahadur Khatri of Chandannath for producing fodder and sheep farming respectively. Farmer Karna Singh Kathayat of Kankasundari was also feted.
In agriculture sector, Buddhi Basnet of Tila, Susila Bohora of Patarasi, Paran Dharala of Tatopani, Niroj Raj Giri of Chandannath, Babita Bhandari of Guthichaur, Gagan Bahadur Shahi of Sinja and Nar Bahadur Gharti of Kankasundari were awarded.
They all received Rs. 10,000 and a certificate of praise each. The farmers expressed happiness for being honoured by the government.
“With the honour, I feel that my responsibility has also increased. It has also motivated me to move ahead and achieve more,” said Kalij farmer Upadhyay. Upadhyay, who is also the former vice chairperson of Tatopani Rural Municipality, suggested that farmers should be focused on production and self-dependency rather than being depended on grants.
Similarly, farmer Niroj Raj Giri stressed that receiving the honour from the government was a great achievement for him at a time when farmers’ role has not received the respect they deserved.
Meanwhile, government officials urged farmers to be more active in the sector and reach the authorities for necessary support.
“We must focus to become self-reliant through agriculture. We will try to provide all necessary resources to farmers and expect quality production in exchange,” said CDO Prasai.
