A total of 143 farmers of Jumla have received shepherd allowance. Around 265 farmers submitted applications in the proposal called by the Animal Hospital and Animal Services Office. Allowance has been given to 143 farmers after inspecting their farms.
Govinda Bahadur Mahat, chief of the Animal Hospital and Animal Services Office, Jumla, informed that only 143 people received shepherd’s allowance after on-site report and evaluation of the proposal submitted by the farmers seeking allowance.
According to him, the government has made such an arrangement to increase the production of sheep in Jumla. They are given shepherd’s allowance as an incentive so that they can buy necessary goods when they go to look after the sheep for a year, he said.
The Ministry of Land Management and Agriculture of the Karnali Province has implemented the programme to provide ‘Shepherd Allowance’ to encourage sheep-rearing farmers.
According to Mahat, farmers who rear more than 50 sheep have been given an annual allowance of Rs. 18,000 at a rate of Rs. 1,500 per month.
During the relief distribution programme for the farmers affected by the lightning that killed the sheep on Sunday, Mahat said that the government has brought an effective allowance programme for sheep-rearing farmers.
Dr. Lekhraj Dahal, secretary of the Ministry of Land Management and Agricultural, Karnali Province government, said that the programmes such as herdsmen’s allowance were popular and would be further strengthened.
A total of 28 farmers have registered their farm at the animal hospital and animal service office with the implementation of shepherd allowance introduced by the provincial government.
Relief to farmers affected by sheep killed in lightning
Karnali Provincial government has distributed relief to the farmers who lost a large number of sheep due to lightning in Patarasi Rural Municipality of the district.
About of Rs. 520,000 has been distributed to five sheep farmers who lost 130 sheep to the lightening as relief.
Secretary Dr. Lekhraj Dahal handed over the check to the farmers amidst a function.
According to the Office, 130 sheep died while 300 went missing when lightning struck Bagjale Patan in Patarasi Rural Municipality-4 on July 1, 2022.
Among the affected farmers, Dharamsingh Riu received a check worth Rs. 144,000, Suk Riu Rs. 176,000, Man Bahadur Rokaya Rs. 80,000, Shankar Nepali Rs. 40,000 and Jora Rokaya Rs. 80,000.
According to the Karnali government’s livestock relief distribution procedure, the animal service office said that the distribution was made at a rate of 4,000 per sheep.
While distributing the relief, the Surkhet Secretary of the Ministry of Land and Agricultural Cooperatives, Dahal said that relief was arranged for the farmers as soon as they suffered bit losses.
He emphasized on commercial sheep-rearing by expanding the insurance programme effectively.
District Coordination Committee chief Gaurinanda Acharya thanked the local administration, Animal Hospital and Animal Services Office and the provincial government for getting timely relief to the affected farmers.
