Altogether 3,470 candidates have registered their candidature for the post of mayor in 276 municipalities across the country, according to the latest data provided by the Election Commission.
The government is holding local level elections on May 13.
With the registration of large number of candidates, the EC said that people were found excited for the upcoming local polls.
According to the EC, more than 149,750 candidates have registered their nominations for various posts in 753 local bodies till the latest calculation was made by 7 PM on Tuesday.
Tulsi Bahadur Shrestha, Joint-secretary at the EC, said that the EC was still busy collecting data. “Till now 149,752 candidates are found to have registered their candidatures for various vacant posts in 753 local bodies,” he said, adding that the data collection on the national server was still going on.
Data in the EC server shows 3,470 candidates registered their nominations for the post of mayor in 276 municipalities across the country while 2, 134 had registered their candidacies for the post of deputy-mayor.
Likewise, 3, 376 candidates have registered their nominations for the post of chairperson in 460 rural municipalities whereas 2,392 filed their nominations for the deputy chairpersons.
Likewise, 34, 803 candidates registered their nominations for the post of 6,743 ward chairpersons, 25, 924 for the post of women representatives, 23, 341 for the post of Dalit women representatives and 54, 312 for the post of open members in the ward.
There are six metropolitan cities, 11 sub-metropolitan cities, 276 municipalities and 460 rural municipalities in the country.
Meanwhile, our Janakpur correspondent adds: A total of 37,377 individuals have registered their candidacies for the upcoming local level elections from eight districts of Madhes Province.According to the Election Commission Nepal, the candidates have applied for mayor/deputy-mayor, chairperson/vice-chairperson, ward chairperson, women member, Dalit member and other members.
Officials informed that 1,354 individuals have applied for mayor and 644 for deputy-mayor. Similarly, 882 persons are contesting for the post of chairperson and 473 for vice-chairperson in rural municipalities.
A total of 6,268 are contesting the polls under women members, 5,986 under Dalit members and 12,861 under general members.
According to our Palpa correspondent, out of seven candidates, four women have been registered for the post of chairperson in Bagnaskali Rural Municipality of Palpa district.
Saraswoti Chidi from the CPN-UML, Sunita Adhikari from the Nepali Congress (NC), Mina Kumari Gaha from Janata Samajwadi Party and Ambika Pandey as an independent contestant have registered their candidature for the post of chairperson in the rural municipality.
The total of five candidates have been registered for the post of vice-chairperson, two of whom are women – Khagisara Lamichhane from Janamukti and Chandra Kumari Disuwa from Mangol National. The other candidates are Hari Prasad Pathak from the CPN-UML, Khimananda Pandey from Unified Socialist, Hem Bahadur Somaiko from Janata Samajwadi Party.
Likewise, only women candidates have been registered from Rastriya Janamukti Party in Tinau Rural Municipality. The party informed that Laxmi Kumari Ashlami for the post of chaiperson, Basanti Thapa for the post of vice-chairperson, Huma Kumari Darji for Dalit member, Nirmala Sinjali for women member, Kamala Ashlami and Narayani Thapa for open member have been registered.
In Geruwa Rural Municipality of Bardiya, father and daughter-in-law from the same house have been registered from two different parties. Bal Bahadur Tharu from the CPN (Maoist Centre) has been registered for the post of ward chairman and his daughter-in-law Laxmi Kumari Chaudhary from the NC has been registered for vice-chairman of the municipality.
Tharu lost the post of ward chairman by two votes in 2015 election.
Similarly, husband and wife have been registered in Rajapur Municipality. Ram Mani Upadhaya and Samjhana Upadhaya from Rastriya Prajatantra Party have been registered for the post of chairman and vice-chairman of the municipality.
